breaking ground - flexibility + function: wash park residence

We're wrapping up on a highly customized residence in Washington Park. A family with young children desired to redesign their backyard into a space that could flexibly function to accommodate the uses of kids and adults alike. The existing yard with limited space presented a challenge when it came to incorporating the desired functional and play elements. The solution: an outdoor living room with customized pieces that perform multiple functions. Comfy chairs surround a custom fire pit and outdoor movie screen bordered by a greenscreen. The fire pit can be covered to transform into a coffee table. The spacious dining table converts into a ping-pong table and the custom playhouse duals as a bike storage unit. Gardening opportunities are tucked in with raised beds on the south side of the house and a vertical garden comprised of copper gutters flanking the garage for growing lettuce and herbs. The sloped lawn in the font yard was terraced to expand usable space, allowing for a café table and chairs. The front yard is enclosed by a boxwood hedge to create a soft privacy screen and features a perennial garden.
