grand park / los angeles

"a back yard for the community."

los angeles' newest park may be its greatest. grand park by rios clementi hale studios is right in the middle of downtown, and truly makes the best of its unique site.

a riotous burst of color and plant diversity, as well as signage in all 26 "official" languages of los angeles, grand park is a direct representation of the stunning diversity of the city. plants from the world's six floristic kingdoms mix to create a gorgeous palette that is ever-changing.

the signage and branding of the park, by sussman/prejza, is well-done. dynamic and informative, it teaches and explains without feeling like a stodgy museum exhibit.

but enough analysis - how does the park actually feel to be in? one of our friends in los angeles (an architect) says that she tries to get there as often as possible. "it truly feels like a back yard."
