DIA shoulder stabilization
we were tasked with a seemingly easy project by our friends at kimley horn: develop artwork for a retaining wall next to a new parking lot at denver international airport. however, the project was much more complex than initially thought; the slope changes from 1:3 to 1:4 down to 1:2, and we must adhere to traditional cdot construction detailing. the result? an exploration of bold, graphic art pieces based on the surrounding prairie, silhouettes of planes, and aeronautic cloud patterns.
linear 1 was selected as the final installment with mixed bands of plantings and textured concrete reminiscent of dancing seed heads in the surrounding native grass prairie. these bands give color, rhythm, and movement to the paving field with a consistent mix of hardy sedums throughout to create a unified green texture.
